MONONA, Wis. — A new municipal ordinance here will penalize parents who fail to discipline their children for bullying. Bullying fines will start at $114 and can cost parents up to $177 for each additional offense.
Monona police will only give tickets to parents who refuse to address their child’s bad behavior, not for parents that are making an effort to correct a child’s actions, New York Daily News reports.
The ordinance is in response to the increase in school shootings, teen suicides and cyber bullying. Monona police hope that the fines will prompt parents to take responsibility for their children’s conduct.
