Texas School Allows Teachers To Carry Guns

Published: December 20, 2012

A Texas school superintendent defended his district’s policy of allowing teachers to carry concealed handguns, telling the Star-Telegram that his schools couldn’t wait for deputies during an active shooter event.

Harrold Independent School District Superintendent David Thweatt implemented the policy, called the “Guardian Plan,” in August 2008. The district became the first in the country to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons if they get a license and board approval.

The 110-student K-12 school district is 30 minutes away from the nearest sheriff’s station.
