COLLEGE PARK, Md. — University of Maryland police are standing by their decision to issue three urgent alerts about a tornado that could have hit campus, even though the National Weather Service had not issued a warning.
Student, staff and faculty took cover on Oct. 14 at the sound of emergency sirens but no tornado appeared, the College Park Patch reports. The National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch for the Washington metro area but not a warning indicating an imminent strike.
University police said they based their three warnings — which indicated the tornado would strike in the next 13, 10 and three to four minutes, respectively — on warnings from AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions.
