NORFOLK, Va. – A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting that injured two men on Norfolk State University’s (NSU) campus Saturday night.
Zakeyis A. Womack was taken into custody following an investigation, reports WAVY. He faces multiple charges, including two counts each of malicious wounding, use of a firearm, and shooting in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond.
New NSU Security Policies for Students, Faculty, and Staff
The incident prompted Norfolk State to announce significant changes to its safety and security protocols. While the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, NSU has shared details on how it plans to enhance campus safety to protect its community of students, employees, and visitors, reports WTKR.

NSU’s changes will affect both student and employee policies, as well as campus police operations. The improvements include:
- Student and employee ID cards must now be visible while inside campus buildings.
- Visitors will be required to display proper decals and signage while on campus.
- Access to campus will be restricted to one entry gate during evenings and overnight hours.
The NSU Police Department is also making changes by increasing its security presence and upgrading its technology to deter future incidents of violence and crime. Key measures include:
- Greater collaboration with Norfolk police department, including more foot patrols.
- Installation of additional surveillance cameras on campus.
- Deployment of more off-road vehicles and officers on bike patrols.
- Expansion of the NSU patrol fleet with added vehicles.
- Plans to hire new officers starting in the 2025-26 academic year.
Norfolk State Student Victim Shot 6 Times
The identities of the two men who were shot have not been released. However, one victim has been identified as an NSU student.
13News Now is reporting that he was shot six times in his arms, legs and stomach. One bullet grazed his cheek and neck. He is currently recovering from multiple surgeries, and more surgeries could be required after his release from the hospital.
