COLUMBIA, S.C. — Approximately 50 South Carolina Department of Education employees have been laid off since May as part of an ongoing restructuring to make the agency more efficient.
The 50 employees represent nearly 13 percent of the agency’s non-transportation employees, The Sun News reports. As part of the overhaul, two of the department’s five divisions will be consolidated. The personnel in the Office of School Safety have been let go.
Department officials hope to finish restructuring by the end of the year, according to a spokesperson for Superintendent of Education Mick Zais.
