WAUKESHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin appeals court ruled on June 22 that the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (UWO) Campus Police have the authority to pursue a suspect off campus and make an arrest.
Previously, Winnebago Circuit Judge Robert Hawley dismissed a case in which campus police arrested a UWO student on prohibited alcohol content charges, The Northwestern reports. The District 2 Court of Appeals later concluded that if the offense occurred on campus, campus police had the authority to arrest the student under the “fresh pursuit” policy.
The court also ruled that if the offense didn’t occur on campus, the campus police could still make a citizen’s arrest.
