MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A freshman at Middle Tennessee State University who has been charged with the murder of her roommate says she acted in self-defense. Tina Stewart was pronounced dead at a local hospital after she was stabbed in the chest by her roommate, Shanterrica Madden.

Officers responded to a disturbance at the women’s apartment on March 2 and found Stewart gravely injured, the Associated Press reports. She had suffered multiple stab wounds in an altercation with Madden. The knife used in the fight was Stewart’s.

Stewart was a guard on the university’s basketball team, the Blue Raiders. The team decided to play at the Sun Belt Conference tournament as planned over the weekend.

Madden is being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge. She is scheduled to appear at Rutherford County General Sessions Court on March 11.
