BEDFORD, Mass.—Police arrested a man at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital after he allegedly handed over a homemade pipe bomb.
Christopher McDonald and Sean Carney had been walking near the emergency department and were pointing at several nearby buildings when police approached the pair for acting suspiciously on June 11, reports Itemlive.com. Police were arresting Carney for an outstanding warrant for drug charges when they noticed an open container of alcohol in the suspects’ car.
Police then questioned McDonald, who then handed over the pipe bomb and marijuana. The state bomb squad detonated the bomb, which was strong enough to demolish a car and kill a bystander, according to police.
One of the men was planning to attend a detox program at the hospital. It is unclear what the two planned to do with the bomb.
McDonald was charged on two counts of possessing a bomb. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
