Although this week’s Campus Safety news round up covers stories that directly apply to university police officers, they also hold lessons that all members of the security field can take away.
We start off by giving an overview of the drug trend story on Vape pens that ran in the Jan/Feb issue of the magazine and online last week. Written by Officer Jermaine Galloway, the article gives tips on identifying when a Vape pen is being used for illegal drugs and covers the evolution of the pens. As the products gain popularity, more and more campuses are dealing with the possibility of students smoking marijuana in plain sight. It’s not something campus police can afford to ignore.
The second story we cover is more humorous, but no less important. The University of Delaware created a music video that spoofs a popular rap song to teach kids about different campus resources they can use to contact police. It’s funny, educational and attention-grabbing. Look past the bad dance moves and tone def officers, however, and there’s an important lesson to be learned from the video: the police department got kid’s attention.
How many times has your department wanted to get a message across to students? Perhaps it’s time you grabbed your boogie shoes and got creative!
