The University of Findlay announced it will be hiring sworn police officers over the summer for its campus security force.
The university is hoping to have sworn police in half of its security department’s positions within two years, according to the Toledo Blade.
The police officers will carry a Glock pistol and wear a district uniform while the unsworn security officers will continue to be unarmed.

Currently, 20 security officers work both part-time and full-time on the university’s force. Only three of the officers have the credentials necessary to become sworn police officers by this fall. When emergency situations escalate on campus, officers call the Findlay city police for assistance. City police already patrol the campus area and typically respond to medical emergencies and student parties.
The university announced last week that officials hired its first police chief to head its public safety department. William Spraw, who retired as the town of Findlay’s police chief in 2009, begins his new position at the school June 1.
The private northwest Ohio university enrolls around 4,200 students, only a third of whom live on campus.
