The Atlanta University Center will be adding video surveillance cameras to its campuses in response to a recent hike in crime rates.

The center, which includes Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College and the Morehouse School of Medicine, is hoping to have the additional security cameras running by early 2016, according to cbs46.com.

Student groups, community activists and the NAACP have long called for increased school security and recently demonstrated on some of the area’s most violent street corners. The students also demanded the mayor take action to stop crime.

In the last year rapes are up 300 percent and residential robbery cases are up 300 percent in the city, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

The city matched a $300,000 security grant received by Morehouse College to add the cameras. The security cameras will improve surveillance at all four schools and will be integrated into Atlanta’s Video Integration Center. In total, 40 additional cameras will be added to the existing surveillance system.
