An Idaho city is threatening to cite Idaho State University security officers if they continue to perform the tasks of the Pocatello police department. The city wrote the university a letter expressing their concerns about the security force overstepping its boundaries, saying there have been several incidents of that happening on campus.
Pocatello police say security guards delayed calling them on an accidental shooting when an assistant chemistry professor shot himself in the foot when his gun went off in his pocket during a lecture in September. Police claim the scene of the incident was cleaned up when they arrived, according to a report in The Spokesman Review. They also say the university’s security force gave an alcohol breath test to a driver before the police arrived and also took marijuana out of a room but didn’t notify Pocatello police for three days.
City officials also want the university’s security officers to do away with their uniforms, which are similar colors to the Pocatello force and wear orange shirts and black pants instead. Idaho State’s security officers just started carrying weapons this year. A meeting is expected to be held between the Pocatello mayor, police and the university’s public safety director to discuss the matter.
