If approved by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, UNC students at the Charlotte campus could be required to pay a $30 fee to maintain security.
The new fee is expected to generate a total of $558,888 for UNCC. University officials said the money would be used to help prepare officers for extreme events such as active shooter incidents and increased federal and state regulations, such as those requiring more detailed sexual assault investigations, WSOCTV.com reports.
The fee would be assessed to students by each UNC institution for the 2015-2016 school year. For all the schools, the fee would bring in approximately $5.4 million – on top of an already proposed hike in tuition.
