An emergency room assault on a nurse Sunday in British Columbia prompted nurse union leaders to criticize hospital’s emergency room security standards in the region.
The assault is the latest sign that emergency rooms are not safe enough, says Vice President of the B.C. Nurse’s Union Christine Sorenson. Sorenson demanded more nurse security training, better reporting of incidents and more security officials in emergency departments, according to the Vancouver Sun.
The nurse was attacked in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre while caring for a patient who became agitated. She suffered serious trauma and face and head injuries.
A spokesman with Fraser Health Authority, Ken Donahue, says his company reviews all violent incidents to learn how they unfold and to prevent them in the future.
