More than two dozen students who either currently or formerly attended the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) have filed a federal complaint against the school for allegedly mishandling campus sexual assault cases.
The complaint claims that UC Berkeley discouraged reporting of sexual assaults, failed to inform victims of their rights and mishandled the cases being heard through the university’s disciplinary process, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
This complaint follows a previous one filed by nine students last May, which alleged that the school was intentionally under reporting sexual assaults. In response to last year’s complaint, California lawmakers requested an audit of the school, as well as the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
The students are asking the U.S. Department of Education to investigate, claiming UC Berkeley violated Title IX and the Clery Act.
The complaint follows many others filed by students and faculty at other institutions of higher education across the nation. Those schools include Dartmouth, the University of Southern California (USC), the University of North Carolina (UNC), Cedarville University, Swarthmore College and Occidental College.
