OAKLAND, Calif. — The former student who is suspected of opening fire at Oikos University Monday morning, killing seven and wounding three, was teased by other students because of his poor English skills.
Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told Good Morning America that One Goh, 43, a former nursing student at the school and the suspected gunman, was mistreated by his classmates. He was having behavioral problems and was recently asked to leave the college, reports the Chicago Tribune.
The suspect was looking for one particular female administrator, and when he couldn’t find that person, he took one person hostage and ordered others in the classroom to line up against the wall, reports NPR. He then allegedly began shooting at them. Most of his victims were women. Goh left briefly and then came back, shooting around the school, reports Yahoo News. He left the scene of the shooting in one of the victim’s vehicles. Six students and one campus employee were killed.
The suspect was taken into custody by police in the parking lot of a nearby shopping mall, KTVU reports. SWAT teams searched the school for more victims and also other possible suspects.
For about an hour after the shooting, authorities believed the shooter might still be on campus, reports the Associated Press. They now believe Goh acted alone.
Oikos University offers classes in theology, music and nursing.
