Case Study: Longwood University Chooses Cooper Notification’s System

Longwood University, located in Farmville, Va. was founded in 1839. Nearly 5,000 students are enrolled at the university with 70 percent of undergraduates living on campus. With more than 800 full-time and part-time faculty and staff, the university has 50 buildings on the 60-acre campus and 32 buildings off campus.

Cooper Notification’s Multi-Layered Mass Notification System (MNS) Solution
Cooper Notification’s Mass Notification System (MNS) solution, which includes outdoor warning systems, emergency text messaging and email alerts, enables Longwood University officials to alert the campus community in real time during times of extreme circumstances such as a tornado or police emergency, and offers the best protection for the entire campus.

The university has installed six WAVES (Wireless Audio Visual Emergency System) High Power Speaker Arrays (HPSA) at highly populated on- and off-campus locations for exterior voice alerting. In an emergency, the HPSAs will broadcast a siren alert, followed by a live or recorded voice message tailored to the situation. The intrusive system has the capability of alerting the entire campus or individual areas depending on the scope of the emergency.

Cooper Notification’s Roam Secure Alert Network™ (RSAN™) emergency text alerting system, known as Alert Longwood, sends emergency text messages to students on their cell phone and an email to their university e-mail account.

Cooper Notification was chosen, Dillon said, because it met all the university’s requirements: Cooper Notification’s MNS has been successfully tried and tested in military applications, and WAVES outdoor warning system could be integrated into the RSAN™ platform for one system solution.  Some of the system requirements included the ability to deliver clear, audible voice alerts to the outdoor population; to operate on its own network, not relying on the college’s infrastructure in the event of a power outage; and to activate the system quickly and easily.
