LEHI, Utah — Alpine School District is standing by its decision to notify a student’s parents of his sexual orientation after the boy wrote about being gay for a class assignment.
A teacher approached the student after he wrote about being gay for an assignment that was going to be posted on the wall of the classroom, MSNBC reports. When the boy said he was fine with sharing his sexual orientation publicly, the teacher went to the assistant principal, who spoke to the boy about talking to his parents.
The boy “reluctantly” agreed to let the principal tell his parents that he was gay, according to Rhonda Bromley, a spokeswoman for the Alpine School District. He requested not to be present when his parents were told.
The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network has spoken out against the incident.
