A 7-year-old student was shot in a Louisiana elementary school’s classroom Monday.
The student was taken to nearby Lafayette hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.
The incident at Moss Bluff Elementary School in southwest Louisiana began when a first grade student brought a loaded gun to school in his backpack.

“The gun fell out of the backpack in the classroom and another student picked it up,” Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso told klfy.com. “The gun accidentally fired, hitting another student.”
The school went on lockdown briefly as a precaution.
Neither the student who brought the gun nor the student who fired it will be held accountable due to their age.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will forward its investigation’s findings to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if the gun owner should be charged.
