Louisiana Considers School Safety Bills

On Wednesday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law House Bill 718, and the state Senate is considering House Bill 368, which also covers school security.

HB718 will require schools to coordinate with first responders and public safety officials in preparing school safety and crisis plans, reports the Times-Picayune. Additionally, schools will need to conduct active shooter drills within 30 days of the first day of school and train staff how to respond to active shooters.

HB 368, which is scheduled to go to the senate floor would require biannual drills and peer counseling after an incident. It would also encourage schools to hire armed guards.
