School officials are praising their own reporting practices after a study revealed a high number of reported sexual assaults per person at a Missouri college.
According to Clery Act reports, Northwest Missouri State University has the most reported sexual assaults per capita among schools in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The reports are based on the last three years, and the results mean very different things to different people, according to the Northwest Missourian.
NMSU’s police chief, health educator and vice president of student affairs all responded to the report the same way, claiming the university is doing a better job than its peers getting students to report sexual assaults.

Vice President of Student Affairs Matt Baker referred to the national statistic that one in four women are sexually assaulted in college as a sign that his school has the best reporting practices.
“Let’s assume one in four women are sexual assaulted in college,” Baker said. “Shouldn’t every university statistic be close to one in four?”
The one in four statistic, which has sparked a nationwide campaign, has been highly scrutinized for dated and questionable survey techniques.
