Police Investigate Shooting Death of Wilmington College Football Player

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Wilmington College canceled all classes on Monday to mourn the sudden death of sophomore football player Tony Crane, who tragically passed away early Sunday morning.

According to authorities, Crane, a member of the Wilmington College football team and the Delta Theta Sigma (DTS) Fraternity, was found with a fatal gunshot wound at the DTS Fraternity House shortly after midnight, reports Local12. The Wilmington Police Department arrived at the scene around 12:43 a.m. and confirmed his death. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and police assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. The incident remains under active investigation.

Wilmington College Offers Counseling to Students, Staff Members Impacted by Crane’s Death

Sigrid Solomon, Wilmington College’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students, addressed the campus community with a heartfelt statement following the incident, reports WXIX.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of one of our own, Tony Crane,” Solomon said. “Counseling and Campus Ministry Services are available to students. The Wilmington Police Department continues investigating and reports no danger to community members.”

The college prioritized providing emotional support for its students, faculty, and staff after the devastating news. Counseling Services and Campus Ministry were available Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the campus Meetinghouse to offer care and guidance.

School officials did not provide further details on the cause of Crane’s death. The college community is encouraged to seek mental health support as members cope with the loss.
