Police Waited a Year to Report Connection Between Assaults

SARASOTA, Fla. — Female students attending Ringling College of Art and Design or New College of Florida were the targets of five known break-ins over an 18-month period. However, local police waited over a year to tell school officials that they knew the crimes were connected.

The suspect allegedly sexually assaulted two of the victims, the Herald-Tribune reports. Ten days after the most recent attack — which occurred on Feb. 8 — police released, for the first time, details of how the suspect picks and stalks his victims.

Students said that E-mail blasts sent out by campus police about the attacks were vague and lacked urgency. In some instances, the E-mails were sent out weeks after the attacks.
