HAYWARD, Calif. — The principals of three high schools met with the Hayward Unified School District to discuss the security measures being taken on each campus. Among the many topics, officials focused on addressing gang violence through dress codes and the need for more supervisors and counselors.
Mt. Eden, Hayward and Tennyson high schools have banned students from wearing gang colors, the Oakland Tribune reports. Enforcement is at the discretion of each school’s principal. Hayward High principal George Bullis said that he focuses on students who are known to be associated with “less positive” activities, but district trustee William McGee said that the same rules need to apply to all students.
Hayward High brought in a temporary campus supervisor, which Bullis said the school has benefited from. Mt. Eden principal Jon Lorimer said the school’s three assistant principals have been a “tremendous help.”
Board president Lisa Brunner said the meeting was planned to take place later in the year, but was moved up after fights between students and adult gang members erupted near Hayward High in early April.
