A boy pleaded guilty Friday to six charges related to the shooting of a student inside of a Kentucky high school.
Andre Banks, 17, was sentenced to 18 years in prison Friday after he said he inadvertently shot a 15-year-old student in Fern Creek High School while trying to shoot another student he had a dispute with, according to wdrb.com.
Banks told police he tried to shoot a student on Sept. 21 after the student gave him a counterfeit $100 bill in exchange for an iPad. Banks missed the student he was angry with and hit freshman Javaughntay Burroughs in the stomach. Burroughs is expected to fully recover.
Banks’ plea agreement allows him to stay in juvenile detention until he turns 18, at which time he will be re-sentenced as an adult and be eligible for probation. Prosecutors will not fight Banks’ release if he finishes his diploma and stays out of trouble, meaning he may actually serve much less than 18 years.
