MARSHALL, Texas — Lawmakers in Texas have proposed the Texas School District Safety Act, which would allow taxpayers to vote for taxes to enhance school security.
The proposed act would permit local districts to create special taxing districts or a dedicated sales tax to pay the costs of added security, KTBS.com reports. Voters across the state would have to approve local districts having authority to levy taxes. If that receives enough support, voters would then have to approve a special tax in an election.
Challengers of the bill fear that children in lower income districts would not receive the same protection as those students in districts with higher incomes.
