JOPLIN, Mo. — Students displaced by a tornado on May 22 will return to class on Aug. 17, even though six of the Joplin School District’s 19 school buildings were destroyed.
Most of the students will go to a different school than they did before the tornado, The Kansas City Star reports. Many of the facilities have been refurbished or retrofitted; some classes will be held in trailers.
Some students from families who lost their homes now live outside the Joplin district in rental properties or FEMA trailers. These students will be bused in from towns as far as a county over.
