The shooter in Tuesday’s murder-suicide near the University of Maryland worked for a short time for the school’s police department.
Dayvon Maurice Green worked as a campus police auxiliary officer for about two weeks last fall, reports the Associated Press.
COLLAGE PARK, Md.—Two University of Maryland students are dead and a third is in serious condition after Tuesday’s early morning shooting. Police are now saying the incident was a murder-suicide.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect, who lives at the off-campus location where the shootings occurred, started a fire in the basement. Two roommates went downstairs to see what was happening. All three individuals left the home and went outside to the front of the home where the suspect began shooting. He shot one of the individuals and then shot the second roommate as he attempted to flee the scene. The suspect then went to the back of the home where he fatally shot himself.
One victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital and the second victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. A weapon was recovered at the scene. Police are no longer looking for any other suspects. The Prince George’s County Police Department. is still in the process of trying to notify the students’ families.
“Today is a tragic day for our beloved University community. We are all shocked and deeply saddened by this morning’s events,” said University of Maryland President Wallace Loh in a statement. “I extend my sincere sympathy and prayers to the families and friends of the victims, all University of Maryland students.”
The school is making several resources available for emotional support, including counseling and campus chaplains.
