LAS VEGAS — University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) police chief has voiced his opposition to a proposed bill that would allow guns on Nevada’s college campuses.
State law currently prohibits firearms at all of Nevada’s public colleges and university. However, Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R-Las Vegas) plans to reintroduce legislation that would allow concealed weapon permit holders to carry guns on state college campus, the Las Vegas Sun reports.
Supporters of such bills maintain that students and staff that carry guns could help prevent mass shootings on campus. However, UNLV Police Chief Jose Lique, who testified against a similar bill that failed last session, cites that those who have a permit to carry firearms do not have enough training to neutralize a school shooter. Furthermore, he said that the lack of training could result in “friendly fire” between armed students.
