LOS ANGELES — Officials at Occidental College and USC admitted to underreporting a number of campus sexual assault cases in recent years.
The declarations come amid federal investigations of their handling of campus sexual assaults. Occidental College stated that it had failed to report 24 accounts of sexual assault between 2010 and 2011, bringing the total to 36 during that period. USC confessed that it had not reported 13 accounts of sexual assault to federal officials during that same time, bringing the total to 39, LA Times reports.
Both schools attributed their restated numbers to the mishandling of sexual assault cases reported anonymously. USC officials noted that they did not disclose those numbers to protect the students’ confidentiality.
Currently, Occidental College is under investigation for violations of the Clery Act. Although USC students have filed complaints alleging Clery violations, federal investigators have not started reviewing the case. Both colleges are under investigation for possible Title IX violations.
