Video of Kindergarten Teacher and Students During Shoot-Out Goes Viral

MONTERREY, Mexico — A video of a kindergarten teacher who sang to her students to keep them calm during a drug shoot-out outside her school gained international attention after it went viral on the Internet. The clip, which is a little more than a minute long, has been viewed over a million times.

Martha Rivera Alanis instructed her students to lay face down on the classroom floor and sing a Spanish-language version of a song from the television show “Barney and Friends,” Yahoo News reports. Meanwhile, five people were shot and killed at a taxi stand across the street from the school.

Alanis was awarded a medal for “civic courage” by the Nuevo Leon government. The teacher said she and her students do drills constantly, because the school is located in a high-risk zone.
