Western Kentucky U. Approves New Weapons Policy

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Western Kentucky University’s Board of Regents approved a new weapons policy Friday that allows weapons in cars parked on campus.

The change is due to a recent ruling in which the Kentucky Supreme Court determined that University of Kentucky graduate student Michael Mitchell had the right to store his gun in his car while parked on campus, the Bowling Green Daily News reports. Mitchell sued the university after he was expelled when police found a gun in his car.

The ruling means that WKU must allow weapons in cars on campus. Previously, no weapons or firearms of any kind were allowed anywhere on university property.
