Key Digital HDMI extenders. YCD’s C-nario Messenger, which serves as the engine behind the displays, is a complete digital signage display, distribution and management software platform that provides 1080p-quality playback. Many of the displays are arranged in longitudinally oriented video walls that run along corridors; Schwartz says that the HD nature of the content allows viewers to take in a complete image even in narrow hallways. “You can pick up details as you go along; you don’t need to see it end-to-end to take it all in,” he says. “That’s why a 1080p HD system and HD content are critical to making this work effectively.”
Schwartz says he got the idea from the huge Samsung display that greets visitors at Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport and from the Kodak displays in Grand Central Station in Manhattan. The calming effect of serene images is amplified by the immersiveness of the extended display configurations. He says he used those as examples when he brought the idea up to Essentialcom’s engineers. They came back to him with several design concepts, but all centered on using a centrally managed software solution, in this case the YCD Multimedia product.
After it was installed in the headquarters facility, it was rolled out to a nearby satellite facility. Schwartz says that positive reaction to the digital artwork warrants extending it to Westmed’s other locations — the proactive has 1,200 employees working over 400,000 square feet of space among its various locations — and eventually to a joint venture facility with Mt. Sinai Hospital in Brooklyn. Content and operation will remain centrally managed by Westmed’s 30-person IT team.
There are other A/V systems plans under evaluation, including videoconferencing to link Westmed’s New York offices with a newly acquired back office location in Charlotte, N.C. But, says Schwartz, this digital signage is as elegant as the A/V technology gets. “It’s amazing how effective this can be at keeping people calm.”
